What a morning! What a walk!

A perfect late September morning in England is a thing of absolute beauty, and that’s what we had today in Clevedon. I went for a walk before breakfast, and went further than I expected to, as it was too difficult to stop!

First photo shows the view across the little park in Jesmond Road… Most views of the coast show the headlands further down the North Somerset coast, and you can often see the islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm, as well as the distant North Devon coast. And of course Wales across the Bristol channel. The view is the reward for a fairly steep climb up the hill!

Then I carried on to Hill Road, and walked up the Zig-Zag to see the various views accessible from there. You get Zig-Zag paths in many hilly towns, but ours in Clevedon is quite well hidden, as the entries from Hill Road aren’t sign-posted. So here are the views:

… and looking across the town towards the distant hills. At least some of the hills shown are the Mendips.

Then I walked down Kings Road and Cambridge Road, past The Avenue….

… The Pier.

I was planning to walk home from the sea front, but the day was so pretty I finished off by walking around Poet’s Walk. No ravens or peregrine falcons today, but plenty of other birds, including a heron looking hopefully at the puddles in the Marine Lake.

Here’s the view as you reach the brow of the hill…

Gorgeous!

I’ve tried to work out the distance and I think it’s about 3.5 miles. The route includes some fairly steep hills, so it was quite good exercise. But more importantly it was a total pleasure – just as good exercise should be!

Capturing a season of mists on camera

Interesting conditions for photography around Clevedon in the last few days. There have been pearly skies like this …

Atmospheric, misty vistas like this …

.. which you really wouldn’t believe was taken at 4 pm in the first week of September. On the same day and just 20 minutes earlier, in fact, than this little view of the pier, which with a little editing would be in the middle of a heart shaped gap in the bushes. We certainly do love Clevedon, and there’s the proof!

It’s all a bit of a challenge to get the camera set up to get the best from the conditions. Still, no one said it was easy to get a great photograph!

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness?

Well not today, and not in Clevedon.  Although it has been very misty lately, the weather has changed and winds are blowing from the North, and what a beautiful day!  Quite exhilarating even though it was quite cool.

You often get quite geometric bands of colour here looking out to Wales across the sea wall, marine lake and the Bristol Channel, but today the effect was particularly spectacular as the sun was so bright and the wind fairly strong.

And then walking around Poet’s Walk it all turned into an old fashioned nature walk, with a beautiful red admiral butterfly on some ivy …

… and the specks in the water towards the foreground in this picture are canda geese.  I can tell you they were making a terrific noise, so I can only assume they were planning on flying off soon.

Beautiful!  It’s not all that long ago (20 years or so) that you’d be able to see masses of red admirals every autumn, but now they are a rare sight, which is very sad.

On a completely different note, while writing I’ll just mention the special offer we have on some wigs in our ebay shop.

You didn’t see that coming, did you!!

One of the first things we bought to sell when we started the shop were some very good quality, long wavy wigs.  They are really beautiful, and come in blonde, red, brown and black with red highlights. People who have bought them have loved them, and said they will definitely be using them again.  We are moving into art work – much more interesting for us – so took these out of our shop.  However, as we are approaching halloween, this seems a good time to re-offer them and we listed them at £24.99.  As we would like to sell them quickly, we are offering them at a 20% discount.  The sale starts tomorrow 11 October.  When they’re gone, they’re gone!
